Where Did Summer Go?

Where did summer go?  Officially, at least here in the south, school is starting.  Which means summer is pretty much over.  Oh, the days are still hot and muggy.  The nights are still a bit shorter, and resonate with the chirp of crickets and (for those of us lucky enough) the rough music of the tree frogs.  But long lazy days at the pool, playing in the park, hiking over trails – those are gone.

While I don’t have little ones at home, I still remember the rituals of those last few summer days – a mix of squeezing all the summer fun possible into the last few precious moments of delicious freedom and the thrill of searching for new school supplies – everything from basic paper and pencils to new clothes.  Starting school each year was like a second New Year – a fresh start.  An opportunity to start over, to recreate yourself and, paradoxically, to renew old acquaintances.  See – very much like New Year.

With the memory of crayon boxes and chalkboards (dating myself – no chalkboards any longer – pungent white board markers now –  not quite the same…..) in my mind, I’m thinking about fresh starts.  Where would I begin?  On a personal level?  And for me, predictably, personal includes fabric – and quilting – and sewing…..

So a fresh start at the beginning of the fall season?  Sure!  I think that fresh start is what thrills many of us.  LIke opening that box of new crayons, the possibilities seem endless.  What stories can we tell with blank pages and a rainbow of colors to tell the story with?  Yes, it is exciting.

I’m looking forward to that beautiful blue that only October skies can have.  I’m eagerly anticipating a crispness to the morning that almost stings  your lungs – almost.  I’m ready to have fall leaves crunch under foot and swirl around my legs in brisk autumn breezes.  And while I don’t necessarily want shorter days, the longer nights have their own unique appeal.

And I’m ready to tackle some new projects.  Ready to take myself out of my comfort zone and push myself past what I know I can do to what I think I can do.  Scary?  Heck yeah!  But already I’m feeling the bubbly rumbling – remember that?  When you were slightly uneasy, just a bit nervous, and yet practically giddy with anticipation – so much so that you couldn’t sleep?  That.  That sensation is heady.  It is invigorating.   It is transforming.

So new project – scary project – slightly, somewhat impossible project, here I come.  My pencils are sharpened, my crayons are fresh, my shoes are polished, my shirt pressed, my lunch packed.  First day, here I come!

And what about you, dear friend?  First day rituals?  New starts?  Let’s go!  I’ll see you at the bus stop.

Happy Stitching!
